Fantastic Fathers- June 17, 2012

Sunday, June 17th, 2012

This morning Charlotte and I gave Greyson his silly Father’s Day cards that play music.  Charlotte thought these were so fantastic that we had to keep her from tearing them.

They went to the pool for a Daddy/Daughter swim.  The two of them love nothing more than splashing and blowing bubbles in the water.  I thought their giggles were so fantastic it was all I could do not to tear them both out of the water and smother them with kisses.

Last night Greyson cooked steaks for my Dad.  I let him have Grandaddy time by putting his granddaughter to bed.  It was so fantastic he came downstairs with teary eyes.

I called my Grandfathers and each told me how fantastic it was to get Father’s Day cards from their Great-Granddaughter.  They each asked when we would tear ourselves away from our busy lives to come and visit.

We called my Father-in-Law and he gave us the fantastic news that they would be coming out some time this summer to visit.  I had to tear the phone away from Greyson’s ear so I could hear his voice too.

We laughed so hard we wiped away tears as my Step-Dad opened his card wishing him a “Happy Farter’s Day”.  Rest assured some truly fantastic fart jokes ensued.

I realized how blessed we are this weekend each June.  We get to tear ourselves in many directions to celebrate with so many fathers and it is fantastic.

Father’s Day ‘Do- June 12, 2012

Tuesday, June 12th, 2012

Guess what?  Father’s Day is THIS WEEKEND!  I know!  It caught me off guard too.  I’m here today to tell you not to stress.  I have a great idea.   Send your dad, grandfather, or husband to get the ultimate haircut experience.

If your man is anything like Greyson, he was due for a summer cut.  Today we took him to the Hair Saloon for Men in Cary, NC for an early Father’s Day treat.

It was a large and open lobby with lots of “guy stuff”.  I thought Greyson was getting special star treatment because I’m writing this blog post, but I was wrong.  EVERY man who walked in this place was treated fantastic.  He got a cold drink from the cooler before watching ESPN in the lobby and laughing at Charlotte as she chased golf balls on the putting green.  She developed quite the affinity for the John Wayne cutout.  The spitoons that lined the hall cracked me up and fascinated Charlotte.

No one at the Hair Saloon for Men waited long for service.  The staff was quick and courteous.  The stylist was very professional, giving Greyson exactly what he wanted in a cut and shampoo.  She took extra care shaving his neck.  He loved that she made great conversation.  How awkward is it when some hairdresser thinks she’s really witty but annoys the crap out of you?!   Greyson says that has been the case at a lot of other hair salons that target men.

His experience was topped off with a hot towel and a mint.  Your guy can get a shoulder or scalp massage.  Greyson said he felt relaxed and comfortable there.  He said that other places force the whole “manly-man-guyness” down your throat.  Greyson said the Hair Saloon for Men reminded him of the old Barber Shop where he used to go with his dad as a kid, but with a modern twist.

Greyson even got a complementary shoe shine while he held his little girl.  She was fascinated by Chris.  He is a local high school student and totally adorable.  I love businesses that employ local teens.  Charlotte had to give him a high-five after making her Daddy’s shoes look brand-new.

I had a handsome, happy Hubby after our trip.  He says he’ll be going back on Friday afternoons when he gets off work early.  He says it will be some good time for just him.

Find a Hair Saloon for Men near you.  They have locations all over.  Take your man this Father’s Day!  Let me know how it goes!  Have any of you been there before?  How was your experience?

Disclaimer: Hair Saloon for Men was kind enough to sponsor this post.  They are awesome and made this a good Father’s Day!

A Hard Fought Campaign- May 8, 2012

Tuesday, May 8th, 2012

It’s Election Day here in the Tar Heel state.  Greyson and I sat on the couch and sadly watched the results come in, showing the majority of  eligible voters butcher our State Constitution with bigotry.  ::sigh::  I’m still proud of the fight against Amendment One.

I’m even more proud of my husband’s Facebook status today.  Take a look…

Got a little heated at the voting poll today. As I walked out, saw an old crusty man giving the VOTE NO lady campaigning outside quite a hard time…the lady was very, very nice, simply handing out literature and saying, “I’d greatly appreciate it if you would read this, then by all means, vote however you see fit”. He started yelling at her, until he saw me (they were the only two outside at the time). So I was going to just walk away, until he started yelling again….once I heard him drop an “f” bomb followed by the derogatory “f” term. I closed my car door, turned around and asked him if he had voted yet, he said yes. So I told him, that he better leave or he’s going to go from old to dead much sooner than he had planned. He left…and I avoided jail.
Upon reading this during my workday I had 3 emotions….
  1. I swelled with pride that this man is my husband.  He’s so brave to stand up for what is right and help that woman who was simply  participating in the democratic system by peacefully and lawfully campaigning for her beliefs.  I’m so proud of him and I love him so much!
  2. I got very scared that this crazy man would come after Greyson with a gun.  (Which, by the way, he has a right to carry.  Everyone has the right to own a gun, but not marry the person they love.  Ridiculous.)
  3. I had an exasperated wife moment.  I shook my head at the thought of bailing my husband out of jail because he’s facing a misdemeanor charge of communicating threats at an election precinct.  ::sigh::
I’m still proud.

Schlecht gesungen- April 30, 2012

Monday, April 30th, 2012

I told you of all the songs we regale our child with, particularly in the car.  I’m getting a little concerned about her hearing as she applauds these efforts.  Well, maybe she’s just applauding her desperate parents’ efforts.  She is a sweetheart.

This weekend Greyson belted out a new one I’d like to share with you all here.  It was sort of to the tune of “Oh, Mr. Sun.”

“Mr. Moon, Moon, bright and shiny Moon, hiding behind that tree.

There’s a bear over there and he’s got a gun.

He’s gonna shoot you, so you better run.”

Me (smirking): “Uh, what are you singing to our child?”

Him:  “Oh, that’s a song my family used to sing.”

Me:  “No, the song is “Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun…”  (I went on to sing that totally normal song that we all know.)

Him:  “No, it’s Mr. Moon.”  (He goes on to repeat this insane song.)

Me:  “Why is there a bear and why does it have a gun?”

Him:  “I dunno!  That’s just the song my family sang.”  (smirking)  “It’s an old German folk-song.”

I threw my head back laughing as I pictured his family wearing lederhosen and singing about sharpshooting bears.  I assume it was a salute to the Motherland and a tribute to a fictional Great Uncle Wolfgang.

We did find a song called “Oh Mr. Moon” online, but it has an owl in it.  No bear.  I think he’s full of scheiße.

No more madness- March 25, 2012

Sunday, March 25th, 2012

We gave up after our first Baby Bracketology video because Charlotte sadly picked the Witchita State Shockers to reign supreme in Men’s College Basketball.  Gone is the dream of my 16-month-old having a near-perfect bracket and chuckling with Matt Lauer during our satellite interview with The Today Show.  (Oh, wait.  The tournament is on CBS.  So it would be The Early Show.  Meh.  Okay.)

Our beloved North Carolina Tar Heels battled their coach-sharing rivals, the Kansas Jayhawks in the Elite Eight today.  Here’s a glimpse.

Greyson couldn’t sit the entire game.

Until the last 3 minutes when he glared at the TV with disdain.

Then he hate-Tweeted and posted snarky Facebook status updates.

With this final score our season ends and the madness is over.
