Girly Girls and Tom Boys- June 4, 2010

So you may have heard our little one is a girl.  We were surprised as we were kind of thinking it was a boy.  But, what a pleasant surprise!  The idea of a sweet baby girl has had me humming Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely” for the last day or so.
The thing that has caught me off guard but, probably shouldn’t have, is since we’ve told people they’ve been saying things like, “Of course!”, “Oh, she’ll have to look out for all the frilly pink clothes her mama is gonna put her in!”  Not so fast my friends….
Okay, I called this post Girly Girls and Tom Boys.  I would most definitely fall into the former.  By nature, I was the Barbie- playing-dress-wearing type of kid who begged her parents to paint her bedroom pink.  I grew into a ballet-dancing-Jane-Austen-reading-high-heels-wearing-sorority-girl who made her friends walk down the aisle in pink bridesmaid dresses.  (They were cute, please get the Steel Magnolias image out of your mind.)
That’s not to say I didn’t love camping and backpacking with my family.  My parents made me mow the lawn and pick up dog poop.  The princess thing only went so far and I’m grateful for it.
My whole life I’ve been in absolute awe of Tom Boys.  I admired and envied their athleticism, love of horses, and relaxed attitude towards getting dirty.
Part of me really hopes my little girl is her own person, she can be a Girly Girl like me, a Tom Boy like others, or anywhere in between.  I hope she’s really good at things I’m lousy at.  That would be so cool.  I won’t force things I love on her.  Even the color pink.
So Baby, expect some pink things in your life put in place by your Mama.  But, pick a favorite color and make it all yours.
“I never thought through love we’d be making one as lovely as she.  But, isn’t she lovely made from love.”- Stevie Wonder

I love reading your posts! And congrats on the baby girl! That's uncharted territory for me. We were SURE our first baby was a girl. But as you can see, HE was not! This time I thought it was a boy, but then convinced myself it must be a girl since I think it's a boy. But I was actually right this time – 2 boys for us!

Have fun shopping for all the frilly clothes for baby girls! I was definitely a Tom Boy (hated dresses, played sports, loved frogs and snakes, etc) but I still demanded the pink room and pink bedding. So even if she shapes up to be on the Tom Boy side of things, don't lose hope on the pink room. :)
