A registration sensation! – July 26, 2010

Our kid is officially registered!  Someone is gonna buy her stuff!  Cha ching!  We did some shopping around to find the right places.  Last month I voiced my registration frustrations at a few baby buying hot-spots.

Yesterday was the real deal!  We were armed with more than a scanner, but a checklist and heads full of ratings from Consumer Reports.  Have you heard all this about cribs?  I’m pretty sure Greyson and I slept in finger-severing drop-side cribs with lead-based paint coatings.  That’s why we’ll die early of crazy crib cancer.  But, not our girl!  We were good little yuppie parents and had all the facts.
This was our day….
Mama needed some ice cream to keep her energy up before the scanning craziness.  (Don’t judge, it was 103 degrees!  Nevermind my glucose test is tomorrow.)
Parking spot up-front!
Yes, thank you since we’ll be spending a boat-load here.
Eww!  Ice cream on the shirt.  I told you it was hot.
Dad-to-be, armed-and-ready as he makes his way through the bassinet jungle!
Greyson was a little thrown by the wipe warmer, but then said, “Well, who would want a bitter cold wipe?”  He turns around, sees a package of diapers and said…….
“Whoa!  That kid looks like it just got a bitter cold wipe.”  We scanned the wipe warmer.
We ran into some stuff we thought was super weird.  My man is a Marketing MBA and couldn’t get past this.  “Look how miserable that kid is.  You have to turn the wheel to see the happy kid.  Bad marketing. I looked and that and all I saw was a screaming baby.  We’re not getting that.  I don’t want our kid to scream.”

I hated this one.  Look what it says right on the sleep sack thing.  “Back is Best.”  Of course back is best!  Hello!  Anyone who’s read anything about babies in the last 10 years knows that.  Don’t insult me!  This item was not scanned either.
A victorious Daddy-to-be at the wall ‘o diapers.
Greyson actually said “I just want to do this once.”  I didn’t have the heart to tell him how not only would be back with the fine folks at Buy Buy Baby, but online tinkering with the registry over and over.
Oh, my life was complete earlier that day when and I finally found the perfect crib set at Land of Nod so we registered with them too.  (Online only.)  We’re gonna buy some of our stuff from Smart Momma too.  I haven’t forgotten about her.
Okay, I gotta go now and possibly clean out another closet for all this crap.

LOL – we picked some items (i.e. one bouncy seat over another) based on how happy the kids on the box looked.

You'll have to tell me if this is true…someone told me the wipes warmer wasn't a great choice only because it got their sweet baby used to those nice warm wipes! Then when they were out, say at the mall, where obviously there aren't nice warm wipes, it just made their child scream more than the semi-chilly wipe would have. I never got a wipe warmer, but always wondered if I should have. If you get it and use it, let me know how the baby likes it! And very funny – we too picked some things based on how happy the baby was on the packaging. That's good marketing I guess… Thanks for the fun posts. Keep 'em coming!

Oh I LOVED registering!!! We also love our wipes warmer – good choice Greyson!!

I have never heard of Buy Buy Baby! We registered at Babies R Us. It looks like it's about the same, but I'm going to go check out those other places you're registering, too! I love shopping for baby stuff!!

Have I been your longest visit ever? I've had this window open ALL DAY and didn't have a chance to comment till now. Not stalking, promise – C leaves no time for such pursuits.

If your family is anything like mine, they will ignore/laugh at your registry, and bury you under an avalanche of baby clothes and towels. We got like a dozen towels, I swear. It's as if they were trying to shame me into bathing the baby!

Well, guess who won that one? 😉

My guy is almost 5 but I will share a distinct memory from my registering experience.
I got to the store before my mom and decided to browse the baby clothes and pick something out especially from mommy for my little man in utero. Since he wasn't born yet i obviously didn't know how much he would weigh. I wound up being completely confused as to what size to buy. This culminated with me in tears wondering how the hell i was going to take care of a baby when I couldn't even figure out how to dress him.
Suffice to say, i figured that and a whole lot more out along the way. 😉

Registering is fun. I personally can't stay on top of things enough to put wipes in the plastic receptable much less a wipe warmer. We just buy the refills and store them in the cellophane they're packaged in, which is fortunately resealable.

    Stuff I didn't use:

    1. Diaper Genie- just throw the diapers in the trash and take your trash out regularly.

    2. The thing to put under the carseat in the car where you can store all kinds of toys and snacks and stuff. Your car and your house are about to lose all semblance of organization. Just embrace it.

    3. Baby monitors. trust me, you'll hear her cry-You'll hear it from a mile away. And it'll break your heart. It's a mommy side effect.

Things I thought I'd never use but used the Hell out of:

    1. Boppy pillow. Will save your arms when holding the baby (if you're sitting down) and isn't bad to sit on yourself just after childbirth when sitting isn't always so easy. It was also good for propping the baby up, tummy time, helping him when he started sitting, etc.

    2. Our knock-off Baby Bjorn. Will loved it and we wore him around pretty much until he started to crawl.

Hell, I'm just going to write a blog at some point about my baby product preferences. Sorry to totally monopolize your comment board.

Hi Amy! Glad you found Oh Baby on BF. :) I'm loving BF at the moment… But in other more important news: Congratulations on the baby! Oh, being a mom is the BEST. Yes, hard… yes, tiring… but there is no better feeling in the world than to feel your heart exploding as you stare into your perfect little baby's eyes. <3 I loved shopping for baby gear, and way more "shopping" than actual buying cause I just loved looking at everything, imagining, comparing. {sigh} I still like it actually, it's just that it's slowed down a little cause we really do have everything we need. 😉 Enjoy it! Being pregnant is so special. I hope the rest of your pregnancy is amazing and I look forward to following your journey to mamahood!

This cracked me up! I love your husband's comment about the baby on the diaper package.

Hey now, don't knock the sleep sack- best invention ever. In the winter when it's cold and you can't keep a blanket on them they are worth their weight in gold. Love ours- so nice to know that they are cozy and warm and not smothered in the head area. I think they make some that don't say "back is best"- you just have to hunt a little. :-)
