Size wise- February 7, 2011

My daughter suffers from an affliction I’ve dealt with my whole life.  She has a chronic case of the No Asses.  I believe the Latin term is White Girlius Badonkadonkus.  She’s three months old and can still wear many of her Newborn size clothes.  She can wear 0-3 Month sizes, but 3 Month clothes are too big for my little lady.

The ruffles.  I die of cuteness
Puny posterior aside, I’ve learned most baby clothes sizes are relative.  It’s much like going into Banana Republic  and walking out with a skirt two sizes smaller than you thought.  Then you walk into a department store and reality comes crashing down around you since the Misses department hasn’t hopped on the vanity sizing bandwagon.

I’m not saying vanity sizing is going on in the baby department, but sizes seem different at every store.  Her Gerber brand onesies are quite snug, the Carter’s and Hanna Andersen fit great, and she’s still slightly swimming in Gymboree.  Naturally, the expensive brands from the boutiques fit best, costing me more.

What gives?  Do I just have to keep trying everything on her?  Is it just my kid with the tiny hiney?

My kiddos have unbutts too. :) Pants with adjustable waists will be your BFFs as she gets mobile enough for pants to start falling down…and even more after she's potty trained & she doesn't have a diaper there to hold the pants up!

And it's nice now that my daughter is size 5; some things even come in "slim" sizes so that they don't look odd if I've had to pull the waist really tight.

They can't make it easy on parents and standardize the sizing, can they? My husband has the tiny hiney you speak of – I most certainly do not! I hope our baby takes after him and not me in this respect!

The best part is when they stay so slim like Harrison that they need a size under their age for waist & a size over their age for length.

The kid is now rocking high-waters because he can't keep 18-24 month pants up.

Gerber- particularly the onesies- run notoriously small, like 2-3 sizes too small. Old Navy/Gap is my favorite for Will. Their stuff always seems to fit just right and their weight/height estimations are right on. Old Navy is very reasonably priced, too. Their pants also come in slim fit, relaxed fit, etc, which I didn't even realize until one day Bill said, "Katie, did you buy Will skinny jeans?" Sure enough he was looking quite metrosexual in some slim fits.

It's frustrating, I know. But while she's still stationary, it's okay for things to be a little big. It's also not as easy to eyeball stuff when they're babies. Once she starts moving, you'll get good at looking at things and knowing if they'll fit or not. My overall solution was to find a store that fits (in our case, Old Navy) and pretty much buy everything from there.

My experience in Sebastian's two years is that the cheaper clothes (Target, Old Navy, etc.) fit best by weight but the more expensive clothes (Gymboree, Baby Gap, etc.) fit better by age. Of course, this isn't ALWAYS the case – but it's what I've found to be mostly true.

As for Gerber? Their onesies freaking suck. Sebastian was a big baby at 8 and a half pounds when he was born, but until he was a year old he always wore the "appropriate" sized clothes (0-3 months, 3-6 months, etc.) except when it came to Gerber. At 3 months old he was wearing a freaking 12 month Gerber onesie. For some reason it really bothered me at the time, I'm assuming it was either just a new mom thing or me getting really pissed off from hearing from everyone how huge he was.

Old Navy and Target run SUPER big on me, but I tend to be small for my age. I'm 17 months now and *just* starting to get into Carter's 18 months – the tops fit, but the pants are still a little big. Crazy 8 fits me pretty well and they have REALLY cute stuff!

If Charlotte has 'White Girlius Badonkadonkus' then my youngest must have 'Doesnot Missa Mealius'. My older son was always spot-on with the ages and sizes, except for Gerber, which has been established by other commenters to suck at sizing. But my "little" Justin… he was in 3m clothes by 2 weeks old, 9m clothes at 4 months old, and now 12m and some 18m clothes at 7 months old!

    Hi Amy

Just for my research purposes, what is the age, length and weight of your baby? I wish everyone would include this info in their comments. I've written about "vanity sizing" in kid's clothes before and am always looking for more input, even anecdotal. Thanks for your time
