"Is this bad?"- April 26, 2011

This is amateur parenting at it’s finest, folks. Last night was a big step. (I’m not sure why the video uploaded as “April 11” but it was yesterday. Anyone know why?) Anyway, we got her all ready in her brand new Svan high chair and got her new bowls and spoons from the Easter Bunny. I pumped fresh milk and carefully followed directions on the box of organic rice cereal. All that preparation led to uneventful sputtering. Maybe we should have waited until the cold/cough subsided. I attribute the coughing to that. I know she wasn’t choking on the cereal as I barely put the spoon in her mouth. I’m also wondering if the seat is a little too big. I might put her in the Bumbo chair with the tray and try again tonight. Any thoughts?

Don't worry – feeding will be hit or miss for a while. It will take her some time to learn how to eat without gagging and/or pushing most of it back out of her mouth. Try again and if she still doesn't do well maybe take a break and try again in a week or two. Or it may be that she just does not like rice cereal. Justin hated rice cereal but would eat oatmeal cereal by the bowl.

You reaction at the end cracked me up. :-) I would keep trying. My guess would be that if this is her first time with rice cereal, then she was most likely unsure of how to swallow it and was reacting to the different texture.

    Good luck!

Pretty typical first reaction. Mine didn't like cereal until I mix pureed fruits or veggies in it. (Believe it or not green beans + cereal was very popular. ) (that sounds even grosser not that I wrote it.)

haha the bumbo might make her more comfortable.. and after the yuckies are gone she might be liking it more too.. or perhaps she just has finer tastes than rice cereal.. ew ha.

My daughter just wasn't interested in solids (even bananas) until maybe 6 1/2 or 7 months. And she didn't start eating a LOT of solids until after her first birthday. She was just really into breast milk. :) My son became interested in solids around 6 months. And I have friends whose babies have been trying to take their parents' food at 4 or 5 months. They're all so different!

But rice cereal isn't that interesting of a flavor. Maybe try smushed up bananas (can mix with breast milk if you want) for a sweeter flavor. Breastfed babies are used to sweet milk.

Isis did the same thing when we gave her food at first! Actually for the longest time, any time she got a new texture, she would make that kind-of coughing/choking sound, but it was just her being like "what the heck is this in my mouth??" LOL And we did the Bumbo at first for a while just because she seemed to be more upright & solid.

She looks great!! What a fun time!!! I can't believe she's that big!!!!

Yeah… try again. She looked fine in the seat. It could take her a few tries to get swallowing down.

Our first food was avocado, then banana, After that we did oatmeal with banana. She never like rice cereal.

My nieces both started eating rice cereal at about 4-5 months. My sister's trick – use a finger instead of a spoon. They were able to sort of gum it off the finger and swallowed it. She did move to the spoon eventually, of course! But the finger trick worked really well for both of her kiddos.
