Summer Infant Swaddle Review & Giveaway- July 31, 2014

Summer swaddle

Oh, I am still tired. Less tired than I was, but still sleepy. My darling little baby is 8.5 months old. He’s still not sleeping through the night. It’s been a battle, but we are so close! Hopefully I’ll get some good pointers when I attend a seminar with a pediatric sleep expert soon. That’s why I have put off writing this post. Two companies sent me some great products that have really helped Henry sleep and I want to do them justice, but it took several months to get where we are now. I’m going to write about one today and one next week. Stay tuned for more.

So where are we with Henry’s sleep? Well, he takes about a 30 to 45 minute nap in the morning and a two hour nap in the afternoon. He will go down anywhere between 8:30 and 10:00 pm before waking up one to three times a night. Let me be clear when I tell you this is SO MUCH BETTER than it was. I flashback to the days I slept downstairs on the couch with him either on my chest or in the bouncy seat because he woke up every hour or every other hour each night. I’m still waiting for him to sleep for a continuous 8 to 12 hours. We will get there! Keep the faith!

We were spoiled by our daughter. She slept through the night at just a few weeks old. She loved being swaddled. We only used one brand of swaddle with her. Summer Infant Swaddle. When we brought Henry home, we snuggled him up in the same pink fleece swaddle his sister was in. He also rocked the one with pink butterflies. (See below.) I tried to tell my mom that Henry’s manhood was in no way threatened by the pink, but she wanted to get him “a more masculine swaddle.” I told her that was fine as long as it was the Summer Swaddle with the Velcro. Both my babies calmed down as soon as they were swaddled. Granted, Charlotte slept through the night and Henry woke more often, but they both loved the secure feeling.

Right as I was transitioning Henry out of the swaddle this spring, Summer sent me some of their new offerings. They now have four stages that will take you at least through baby’s first year.

SwaddleMeZulilyPost (1)

  1. I was so bummed out that my kids were too big for the SwaddlePod. They would have LOVED that since newborns seem to like to have their hands by their heads. It’s so “womby” and cuddly. Love it!
  2. We started with the SwaddleMe stage. (That is the pink swaddle and butterfly swaddle I referenced.) We called them our “baby burritos.” They loved them! They can’t break their arms out and startle themselves awake. So many parents tell me, “They break out of the swaddle!” Not these.
  3. When Henry was ready to transition out of the swaddle and it was getting warmer, the level 3 SwaddleMe Wrap Sack was perfect!
  4. Now we are in the SwaddleMe Wearable Blanket and I LOVE it. Henry uses it for his naps everyday. When he sees it he knows it’s nap time. It zips for easy diaper changes. I am still not comfortable with blankets in his crib, so this is great. We call him the “flying squirrel” in this thing. It makes me chuckle every time we put him in it.

So, the SwaddleMe Wearable Blanket is what we’re using for naps now and he is consistently taking good naps. We always had them in seasonal pajamas under their swaddle. We used fleece on cold nights and cotton every other time. If we were in the fleece swaddle, we typically had lighter pajamas underneath. We just used our best temperature judgment and they were almost always comfortable.

Henry uses another product for overnight right now, I’ll write about that next week. Again, we have used Summer swaddles with both babies and highly recommend them. Who wants some?! Summer is offering a super lucky Somebody’s Parents reader a prize package of all four products pictured above! Dude! Baby shower present, anyone? You pick boy colors, girl colors or gender neutral. Don’t fear the pink, boys! Henry didn’t. I’ll pick a winner Wednesday. Good luck!

We are currently fighting some sleep issues too! Rachel slept through the night for a few months but now wakes several times most nights. She also has nights where she fights sleep like it’s her job.

Henry had that “all the sudden I’m awake after a couple months” thing too. Blerg! Good luck! Hopefully some new swaddles will help that sweet little Miss. Good luck! Thanks for entering!

  2. Any color is fine. Would love to give these a try with Baby Girl. My son was never a fan, but I did promise him after he was very late that if he would just come out he could stretch free. And goodness did he love to stretch out in his bassinet and crib! We didn’t get through the night until 8mo and that’s when I finally did CIO with him. I know people have mix reviews, but it did work for us. He was breastfed, but also eating 3 meals a day by then and really was just waking out of habit – not hunger. It took me a bit to learn to sleep longer stretches though as my body was so used to those regular wake ups from him overnight! Best of luck and, as you know already, this too will pass and someday he’ll be sleeping soundly all night long. Get those one-on-one middle of the night special snuggles in while you can. :)

Thanks Sarah! We’ll see what the sleep specialist says. Fingers crossed! Thanks for entering. I’m sure she will look very pretty all swaddled up! Good luck!

These would be great! My baby girl is still in the second and I am so not ready to wean the swaddle, because she sleeps well with it. Thanks for the chance!

  6. Rebecca Parsons says:

Honestly I sing to my granddaughter every night a few lullabies. I am however a terrible singer but she doesn’t know that lol. It really calms her and gets her to sleep every time.

  7. kristen mcclary says:

    • Amy says:

I’ve tried filling him up. I don’t think that’s the issue. ::sigh:: Maybe I’ll just try to feed him more. Thanks for entering! Good luck!

  8. Gina says:

I don’t have any tips yet as our little one is due in a few more months, but I’m taking in all the advice I keep reading! :) I would love any color.

  11. Jessica says:

I currently have one of these!! Works very well and has also held up well in the wash! I choose pink! :)

  12. Bethany says:

We love the Summer Infant swaddles. We used the #2 SwaddleMe swaddles until she was around 6 months. When she was done being swaddled, we switched to the Halo sleep sack (only because I did not know, nor have I seen, the Summer Infant wearable blanket. That looks so much better than ours because the Halo doesn’t have sleeves, so I’m always worried her arms are going to be freezing while the rest of her is warm. She’s 13 months and still uses the sleep sack for bedtime and naps. I always buy the SwaddleMes as maternity gifts because I didn’t know about them until my daughter was almost 2 months old, and they are life changing!

  13. Katie says:

I think I’ve told you, but this sleep thing is just like John. I was back at work, and John was still waking up multiple times. The pediatrician said it was time to CIO. Night one was terrible. He cried for two hours. Bill would go in every fifteen minutes and comfort him without taking him out of the crib. The next night he cried for one hour, same deal. The third night, he slept right through. He’s been the best sleeper ever since. It feels so cruel when you do it, but it really is the only way. And I promise that no emotional damage is done. After the two hour crying spell, John greeted me with a huge smile the next morning. He was just night-waking because he knew he could.

Needless to say, my swaddling days are over, so I don’t need the giveaway. I just wanted to weigh in. It’s a second kid thing. Will and Kat were great sleepers, so don’t let this dissuade you from having a third!

  14. Emily says:

I’d have to go for the Carolina blue! Due date is less than a month away so I am super excited!

  15. katharine says:
