Lil’ Tater- May 24, 2010
I’m never going to look at the produce aisle (or farmers’ market) the same ever again. Through The Bump and the What to Expect iPhone app I’ve been watching each week as our little one has moved all the way from poppy seed now to a sweet potato!
Me being silly with a Sweet Potato at the State Farmers’ Market in Raleigh today.
17 weeks means we have our little sweet potato! I love this. That’s so much better than the turnip it was last week. I have an affinity for sweet potatoes as it is. Greyson is amazed at how my southern family has sweet potatoes or sweet potato pie at far more family functions than just Thanksgiving.
So this week I’ve been thinking of it as my “Lil’ Tater,” which got me thinking of nicknames. Growing up my Dad always called me “Shortcake”. I love it. I don’t know many little girls who grew up in the 1980’s who weren’t obsessed with Strawberry Shortcake like I was. But, I bet that wasn’t their nickname. There were lots of kids with nicknames like “Princess”, “Pumpkin”, or “Champ.” But, no other Shortcakes. Between the ages of about 12 to 16 Dad was kind enough not to call me that in front of my friends because I thought I was so freakin’ cool. By college, I embraced it and had a vanity license plate for years that said SHRTKAKE. (It was humorous the day I had to explain to Dad why it was so important that there was an “R” in the spelling of my plate.)
I’ve been thinking what nickname my little one will have one day. (Maybe I should be focusing on a real name, but that’s another post.) But, this week I’ve enjoyed dreaming about what this baby will love as a kid, and what we might affectionately call it one day.
So keep growing “Lil’ Tater.” Mama loves you!

I have totally been enjoying your blog as I sit here with nothing to do at work. I'm on baby #3 and have never blogged my pregnancies before, but seeing all of the little memories you can look back on is making me want to do it even more.
Thanks for sharing and totally making me laugh!
