Pregnant in a Communist land?- May 18, 2010

I don’t watch every Oprah show but I don’t miss the important ones.  I made sure to record today’s episode with Laura and Lisa Ling.  Laura Ling is one of the American journalists for Current TV who was imprisoned in North Korea and President Bill Clinton had to go and get them.  I like Current TV and followed this story extensively.

That’s great, but DID YOU SEE LAURA LINGS CUTE MATERNITY DRESS?!  I was digging the red and black.  So cute!  (Okay, I got that out.)

Pic from Oprah’s site.

She discussed her amazing story of being in a North Korean prison for 5 months.  Ling said that when she was captured she thought she might be pregnant.  She was locked in a cell with no light at all for a few days before getting an actual room.  She realized later she wasn’t pregnant and said she was sad.

I got to thinking how it would be to be wondering if you were pregnant, worrying that you are because you’re in a North Korean prison, and then being disappointed that you aren’t.  I can understand why she was disappointed.  I mean, it would suck to be pregnant in a North Korean prison, but it would your little nugget of love from home.  But the worry I feel anyway, then being a pregnant prisoner, oh my God!  Add to that, you can’t see your family and you’ve been sentenced to a labor camp for 12 years.  That is more than anyone should have to feel, pregnant or not.

So, congrats Laura Ling on being home for the last 9 1/2 months or so. Big congrats on being home in the US with your husband for your pregnancy.  Sounds like it was a good thing you weren’t carrying a child in a nuclear Communist country.
