Bunking with barn animals- September 20, 2010

I’m coming to realize the amount of agonizing I did over furniture for my child’s room was a bit much.  I knew a finger-severing drop-side crib was out.  I made that clear in my register rants.  We went to a half-a-dozen local furniture stores and baby specialty shops to find furniture good enough suitable for my kid.

My standards dropped with each store visit and online search.  A 15-year-old-made-in-China-stained-finger-severer on Craig’s List was starting to look great compared to paying what it cost for a new freakin crib.

I got incredibly lucky with SmartMomma here in Raleigh.  She has her fantastic new location right by our house and had to unload some fancy pants furniture at clearance.

The room is not finished so I don’t want to reveal too much.  (Yep, I’m truly that self-centered that I think people care how I’m decorating my child’s room.  But, you knew that because I actively participate in the world’s most self-centered activity…blogging.  So indulge me.)

Obviously all the bedding hasn’t arrived yet, but you get the idea.

After all the shopping and all the money we spent, we got our crib, dresser, and armoire.  The delivery company was very honest with me about the scratches on the dresser.  Scratches?!  I could’ve scratched someones eyes out!
Surely no one can move a child into a room with this abomination!
I think it was the store’s apologetic, helpful nature that knocked some sense into me.  The furniture paint guy is coming this week to fix it at no cost to us.
Plus I remembered, Baby Jesus slept in something like this…
I mean, that’s where barn animals ate and subsequently pooped.  If the Savior of the world could handle that, I’m sure my baby will survive scratches on her designer dresser.

Thanks for the much needed perspective. I've been driving myself crazy over what crib to pick for our baby…and this just made me realize how ridiculous I'm being! It is amazing the things we find we "need" now.

Amy, you are hilarious! I also needed some "perspective" while finishing up the nursery…and on how ridiculous I am to hold off on putting on our blog until it's just right. I think you just inspired me to reveal the work in progress today. Hope you're feeling well. Thinking about you!

oh Amy – you have made me laugh out loud. I'm enjoying reading your blog and can't wait to see pictures of the finished product (and baby girl davis in the crib). :-)

I remember those days, every little thing seems to be such a BIG thing. Beautiful crib – looks like the room is coming along great.

Don't worry. She'll add her own scratches to her dresser. Will's got teethmarks all over his crib from where he's used it as a teething apparatus. It's a convertible crib (crib to toddler bed to double bed) that I'm currently planning for him to keep for life, so I'm sure seeing his baby teeth marks on the foot of his bed when he's 17 will be a nice blast from the past for him.
