DJ Mommy & Daddy- September 7, 2010
We are so cool silly that after much brainstorming, we headed to iTunes to make a little playlist for our baby. The idea was to have lullabies and nice songs for her. We are by no means music afficionados but, we have fun playlists titled things like “Wedding”, “Tailgating”, “Beach”, “Workout” etc. We had a preliminary list of songs we wanted, for the “Baby Girl” list. But, we ran into more than a few snags finding appropriate songs.

| Ginger and I on the couch. I was listening to our playlist. She always gets mad when I hog the ear buds. |
Greyson got started as I was doing other things and yells down from upstairs, “Amy, how about this one?” He proceeded to blare Kanye West “Gold Digger.” I died laughing. That was a joke but I cannot tell you how many songs we thought would be great and then were like, “Wait, no, I think that’s about sex.” “Nope, also about sex.”
We nixed each others suggestions. Greyson refused my request for John Lennon’s “Imagine.” “That’s a war protest Hippie song,” he said. “Yeah, better than a pro-war battle cry,” I argued. No dice.
We nixed suggestions from other people. I had to get rid of “In My Daughter’s Eyes” by Martina McBride. Sorry, too sappy, I couldn’t handle it.
Here’s some of our list…
- “Isn’t She Lovely”- Stevie Wonder He wrote it for his daughter when he first saw her. Well, met her. I guess he didn’t see her. (Oh wow, I’m going straight to hell for that one.)
- “Sweet Baby James”- James Taylor
- “You Got a Friend”- James Taylor He’s North Carolina’s native son! He gets more than one song.
- “Carolina In My Mind”- James Taylor Our state’s anthem. Don’t let
SC rednecksour neighbors to the south try to claim this one. (That’s a joke SC! Love ya!) - “Rocky Mountain High”- John Denver This one pays homage to Greyson’s home state. (It is not a drug song Greyson, you sang it at summer camp!)
- “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”- Isreal Kamakawiwo’ole This version is so beautiful.
- “Your Song”- Elton John
- “In My Life”- The Beatles
- “Forever Young”- Rod Stewart It says everything you’d want your child to know.
- “What a Wonderful World”- Louis Armstrong
- “Lullaby Baby Blues”- Keb’ Mo
- “Landslide”- Fleetwood Mac Danced with my Dad to this one at our wedding.
- “A Wink and a Smile”- Harry Connick Jr. Greyson and his mom danced to this one at our wedding.
- “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star- Jewel Jewel’s album of lullabies is AMAZING!
- “Rainbow Connection”- Kermit the Frog It was surprisingly hard to find the Muppet Movie version. The memories will seriously come flooding back when you listen to it.
We have a lot more. I’m sure we’ll continue to add songs and nix the ones we realize are actually about sex.

You're so cute!
Allow me to recommend Sade's "The sweetest gift" and Martina Topley-Bird's "Lullaby".
..and also warn you that soon enough you'll be rocking a soft, warm little bundle and singing Paradise City at 2 in the morning, and nobody will think less of you for it!
Well, I won't.
I would also like to make a suggestion to add to the list. "Calico Skies" by Paul McCartney. It was off his solo album Flaming Pie. This was one of the songs I played to my son while I was pregnant. Yes I was one of those mom's with headphones strapped around my belly like a crazy lady
But seriously, this song is beautiful and perfect in every way for a little son or daughter.
great list of songs! I love the fact that you picked songs that were special to the two of you while still soft and soothing to a small child
This is awesome! I made an Isis playlist, too! You just need music as a soundtrack for this time in your life! It's perfect! And I totally used mine when she was little & napping. I played music for her. She loves music now! It either calms her down or makes her want to dance (aka sit there & bounce).
I might steal your entire playlist. I love it. One artist to add is any song by David Gray. I just saw him in concert last night and he would be a soothing addition.
Rainbow Connection…bahahahaha! WOW, I cant wait to watch our old dance videos with your sweet baby girl!
