Nip it in the bud- March 21, 2011
Sorry for two milk-related posts in a row. I guess it’s just on my mind since my bra cups runneth over lately. I Tweeted this out yesterday…
Sometimes at the mall I just want to shout. “hey lady! Ur kid crying makes my boobs hurt! Plz quiet them down “. #breastfeeding
Leaking is not nearly as bad as it was when Charlotte was first born. We’ve gotten into a pretty good routine with nursing, pumping, and cleaning a million bottles. (Don’t get me started on all the parts that go into making Dr. Brown’s bottles less gassy.) Another mother told me something this weekend I was not aware of. There are different nipple flow levels! What?! Why did no one tell me about this!? Apparently most bottles you buy have only a level 1 or slow-flow for newborns. After that, you need to increase the level so your baby can get the milk faster and it won’t take so long feeding them. No wonder she gets frustrated with how the milk is coming out of the bottle. And here I thought she just wanted to nurse because she loved being near me. No, she can control how fast it comes out of my boobs.

Geez I feel crummy for not telling you about nipple stages. But i will tell you this, dr brown has a wide selection of stages and the package usually suggests age, but i wouldnt go by the package selection. Take her to the next stage/level and increase levels by her cues. Natasha used premmie nipples for her first 4 months and she wasnt even born a premmie. I tested out a faster flow a little too early and totally pissed her off. So i started going by her cues. She's 18 minths now, using level 2 nipple and I know I "shouldnt" have her on a bottle according to our pediatrician, but i dont feel its time to take it away from her. She's not ready or old enough to understand mommy taking away her bobo. 😀 she feeds herself and drinks from a sippy cup but when naptime or bedtime rolls around she has to have it. When she gets a bit older and can understand the big girl concept she'll throw ig away herself. And not give me hated eyes or grumpy face. And yes all the freakin dr brown parts are annoying. But well worth it.
hahah nipple chat! love it!
Oh geez – so much to learn! I'm stressing already. Someone get me a glass of wine. Oh, wait…darn.
ha ha! my lefty was a slow flow!
Omg all the parts of Dr. Brown's bottles!! They work like magic at keeping air out of baby's tummy, but geez, the 10 different parts that go into it make cleaning them fuuuuunnnn, lol
Will never once spit up, and I'm not sure if it's because of Dr. Brown's or not. We switched him to Medela bottles at about 7 months or so and those were SO much easier to clean. I'm going to try John on Medela right off the bat and see if it makes a difference.
Ha ha ha–I think it's awesome that you gave your nipples different levels. Ah, the body parts that suddenly become "discussable" through pregnancy and parenting….
Hope Charlotte loves the level 2s!
