Parental Guidance- March 22, 2011
We’re TV people. Our DVR is always packed. Our television cabinet is often warm after hours of some sporting event or movie. I’ll admit, for the past year or two, I’ve been having a torrid love affair with the Internet. But, the flat screen still holds a big place in my heart.
I was holding my little baby, rocking her the other day. She was about to fall asleep when some incredibly lewd joke on Family Guy cracked me up and my belly laughs woke her up. Her stirrings made me realize how often this pops up on the screen in our living room…
I thought, “Hmmm. My baby does see and hear an awful lot of Eric Cartman and Daniel Tosh. That can’t be good for her moral compass.” I know right now the TV is just colors and sound to her, but how long until she’s gonna recognize Stewie Griffin? More than that, how long until she’ll want to watch crap like Dora the Explorer? I don’t even want to know what Yo Gabba Gabba is, let alone have it take up space on my DVR. (I refuse to Google this program because I’ve heard rumors of it’s nerve grating songs and such.)
When will I have to watch the Disney Channel or Nickelodeon? I am REALLY not looking forward to it. Do you think I can raise a kid who loves Jon Stewart as much as I do? I’m hoping she start getting Colbert’s jokes about Scott Walker so Mommy won’t have to change the channel.

lol! awesome!
Ha! Mommy and I watch Sesame Street in the morning (we stick to PBS kids – no Yo Gabba Gabba here!), but at night, the programming is chosen by Mommy & Daddy. Elmo goes to bed early! Sometimes, though, we compromise with something like Toy Story – especially if im being super cranky.
AMEN! I am dreading the day my TV and DVR are taken over by crappy kids programs. If they never see it, they'll never know it exists right? And who doesn't like Jon Stewart?
I've never done acid, but Yo Gabba Gabba is what I would imagine an acid trip to be. Thankfully Travis does not like that show. He's not really into TV at all except for Blues Clues and Thomas the Train once in a while.
If the kids don't know a show exists, they won't beg to watch it. So we pretty much limit TV to the OnDemand or DVD so we can pick exactly what plays and limit it to just a few shows.
My parents never really let us find cartoons and I hope to do that with my daughter. I mean sure we watched a few episodes of Smurfs on the weekends but for the most part we watched what my parents watched. I never was a huge cartoon person. We even preferred movies with real people. The tv really wasn't on too much, but I do know that I watched some Seasame Street and Mr. Rogers during the week and the nightly news every night with my parents. But we played outside or read. And my husband and I are huuuuge tv people now, but I hope to do about the same with her.
you have some time… but it is creeping in. Eva holds her Sesame Street DVD boxes and points at the TV. Uh Oh
We've boycotted Nick Jr. (with the exception of The Wonderpets) because Bill doesn't like the artwork. Yo Gabba Gabba is totally screwed up. So far, Will seems to watch what we show him. He likes reruns of Flipper, he likes Chuggington on Disney, he likes Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune (seriously), he likes to watch my DVDs of the old Disney series, Avonlea, and he likes movies- Toy Story, etc. He even watches Mad Men with us. He's watched and enjoyed episodes of Family Guy, but now that he talks and understands language, I just don't feel really comfortable letting him watch it anymore– but it's so hard to resist. Anyway, Dora is boring as Hell. It's the same damn thing every freaking episode. And the creators of Yo Gabba Gabba need to go to rehab.
You are going to think I'm insane, but if you just don't turn the tv on, your kids will not know the difference.
I don't know what daycare is like… some home daycares have the TV on 24/7 which is really sad, IMHO.
I think it's kinda on the terms of the parents, how much they have to do. Before I had #5, I never turned on TV and my daughter actually had NO interest in it whatsoever. Once baby #5 came along, I needed an occasional break so I turned on PBS and now she's hooked. It's totally my doing. I wish I'd been able to keep her off the idiot box crack, but alas, I am an idiot box crack addict as well.
And, you think Yo Gabba Gabba is bad? Check out BoohBah. That shit is just really disturbing.
Same in my house, how great is tosh.0!!! I have to be careful which episodes I let jack watch, lets just say the new family guy xmas special was not appropriate anyway you look at it. "mommy why did he kill santa?" omg I suck as a mommy haha
