Should I be repulsed?- October 18, 2011

Before I had a baby I was grossed out by spit-up, boogers, poop, and similar bodily secretions.  Rightfully so.  Those things are icky.

Now that I’m a mother I’ve learned they’re really not that icky if they come from your baby.  I’ve caught myself doing all sorts of things I would have never done 11 months ago.  I’ve wiped Charlotte’s snotty nose with my own fingers and I don’t cringe at her spit on my clothes or in my hair.

But, something I did on Sunday caught me off guard.

Charlotte is eating mostly finger foods, but about 60% of what she “eats” ends up on the floor.  So, I try to top her off with some of those organic baby foods that come in the squeezy astronaut tubes.  They are usually veggie or fruit flavored and much of them end up on her face.

At the State Fair Sunday I packed one of those astronaut tubes in the diaper bag like a good little Mama Bird.  My baby must get her veggies amongst all the deep fried debauchery!  We joined our friends at a little table for a breakfast of homemade ham biscuits at the Shriners Club booth. As expected Charlotte dribbled space fruit down her face.  This tube held a new flavor.  It was super yummy and tasted like Apple Butter or something.

Did I wipe her face with a napkin?

No.

Did I use a baby spoon to scoop the blob on her chin into her mouth?

Nope.

I took my biscuit and sopped up the apple stuff off her face and ate it!  In public.

Greyson’s jaw dropped and he said, “I don’t know whether to be repulsed or proud.”
